Jakarta, Indonesia – Statistics Indonesia (BPS) is poised to take the lead in unifying the country’s fragmented data landscape. This move is driven by the urgent need to modernize Indonesia’s outdated statistics law and address the persistent issue of data inconsistencies across government agencies.
“The 1997 Statistics Law is no longer fit for purpose,” said Bob Hasan, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Legislative Body. “It’s time to overhaul the system and ensure that we have a single source of truth for our nation’s data.”
To expedite this process, BPS has initiated discussions with lawmakers to draft a new Statistics Law. Acting Chief Statistician of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, emphasized the importance of a unified data system: “President Prabowo has entrusted BPS with the critical task of becoming the nation’s data leader. By consolidating social and economic data, we can eliminate confusion and make informed policy decisions.”
The new law will not only streamline data collection and analysis but also empower BPS to conduct more efficient censuses, such as the upcoming 2026 Economic Census. By clarifying respondent obligations and strengthening data privacy protections, the law will ensure the accuracy and reliability of future censuses.
As Indonesia continues to grow and develop, a robust and unified data infrastructure will be essential to unlocking its full potential. BPS, with its commitment to data excellence, is well-positioned to drive this transformation.
