Chief Statistician BPS-Statistics Indonesia to Lead the Governing Board International Comparison Program for the Next Three Years
March 3, 2026 | Other Activities
New York, (1/3) — On the first day of the official agenda related to the 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), held on Sunday afternoon (1/3) New York time (early Monday morning Jakarta time), Chief Statistician BPS-Statistics Indonesia, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, was appointed as Chair of the Governing Board International Comparison Program (ICP).
ICP is a global collaboration involving more than 170 countries, which been running for over 60 years and is coordinated by the World Bank. The program aims to produce standardized economic measures that allow comparisons of economic size and price levels across countries worldwide. One of its most well-known outputs is the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) indicator.
The Governing Board (GB) is the highest decision-making body within the ICP. It is responsible for overseeing the program, providing strategic guidance, and making key decisions to ensure that the ICP operates in accordance with its mandate and international standards, while maintaining the credibility and accountability of the indicators produced.
For the upcoming three-year term, the ICP Governing Board will be jointly led by BPS-Statistics Indonesia and IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). The board will also include representatives from nine other countries—Belarus, Canada, Italy, Jordan, Mongolia, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, South Africa, and the Pacific Islands—as well as five international organizations: the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), African Development Bank, and Asian Development Bank.
In her first remarks as Co-Chair of the ICP Governing Board, Amalia emphasized that global indicators produced through the ICP should not only be methodologically robust, but also reflect the economic characteristics of different regions, particularly those of developing countries, in order to ensure more balanced comparability and progress in economic development across countries. Indonesia will work closely with Brazil in leading the ICP Governing Board.
Amalia also expressed optimism that the Indonesia–Brazil leadership of the ICP Governing Board will be effective, given the strong collaboration that has already been established between BPS-Statistics Indonesia and IBGE. This cooperation has been formally institutionalized through a bilateral cooperation agreement signed in the presence of the two heads of state in Jakarta in October last year.
In her written statement, Amalia noted that the international statistical community’s trust in BPS-Statistics Indonesia continues to grow, as reflected in its appointment as Co-Chair of this important and strategic global program.
“This trust once again demonstrates that the methodologies used by BPS-Statistics Indonesia are not only aligned with global standards, but that we are also recognized as capable of providing guidance and oversight for these global standards,” Amalia stated.
For BPS-Statistics Indonesia, the leadership of the Head of Statistics Indonesia in the ICP Governing Board further strengthens the institution’s contribution and role within the global community of national statistical offices, in line with BPS’s vision to continue evolving into a modern, world-class statistical institution.
