BPS Holds Workshop on Energy Flow Accounts and GHG Emissions: Strengthening Data Collaboration for a Low-Carbon Transition
July 29, 2025 | Other Activities
JAKARTA, 16–18 July 2025 — Statistics Indonesia (BPS) organized a three-day national workshop on the Compilation of Energy Flow Accounts and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions, bringing together representatives from various ministries and agencies, academia, and practitioners in the energy and environmental sectors. The workshop aimed to reinforce data collaboration and harmonization to support Indonesia’s national energy transition toward a low-carbon economy.
The workshop was officially opened by Deputy Chief Statistician for Accounts and Statistical Analysis, Moh Edy Mahmud. In his keynote address, he underscored the critical role of data in shaping energy transition policies, including the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators and the implementation of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA), which has been adopted by BPS.“Data consistency is vital for tracking our progress toward net-zero emissions and ensuring that policy decisions are grounded in reliable, integrated statistics,” he stated.
The event featured a series of in-depth discussions on a range of topics, including national energy policy, methodologies for compiling energy and GHG emission accounts, and the development of GDP/GRDP dashboards based on sectoral data. A key issue highlighted was the harmonization of the latest Global Warming Potential (GWP) metrics to ensure accurate time-series comparisons of emissions and avoid misleading progress in Indonesia’s national reporting to the UNFCCC.
The workshop concluded with a summary and follow-up action plan delivered by Director of Production Accounts at BPS, Puji Agus Kurniawan. He stressed the urgency of inter-agency collaboration and the need to enhance data quality and integration in energy and emissions accounting.“We must move forward together. Harmonizing energy accounts between BPS and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as well as aligning emission inventory data with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, must be prioritized to support sustainable development planning,” he highlighted.
The closing session also reflected on the challenges faced in the field, including data duplication resulting from differing methodologies and dissemination formats, limited literacy in environmental-economic statistics, and the lack of integrated information systems. Despite these hurdles, participants agreed on the importance of maintaining ongoing communication and strengthening stakeholder networks to ensure the sustainability of environmental statistics development in Indonesia.
This workshop is part of BPS’s efforts to implement the Third Data Gaps Initiative (DGI-3) recommendations and to respond to global demands for improved GHG emission monitoring and the enhancement of adaptive environmental-economic statistics in the face of climate change.
