Abstract

The January 2007 Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 147.41, or inflated 1.04 % from the previous month. All indices of expenditure groups increased, except the clothing which decreased from 129.50 to 129.18 or deflated 0.25 %. The foodstuff index increased from 142.92 to 146.75 or inflated 2.68 %; prepared food, beverages, cigarette and tobacco from 139.93 to 141.15 or inflated 0.87 %; housing, water, electric, gas and fuel from 148.34 to 149.40 or inflated 0.71 %; health from 127.03 to 127.71 or inflated 0.54 %; education, recreation and sport from 147.70 to 147.85 or inflated 0.10 %; and the transport, communication and financial services from 167.06 to 167.22 or inflated 0.10 %.
The January 2007 inflation was mainly driven by: rice; fresh fish; tomato (vegetable); shallot; cooking oil; leasing house fee; potato; filter cigarette; kerosene; coconut; small chili; cooked rice and side dishes served together; spinach; sugar; purebred chicken eggs; rental house fee; fried chicken; tomato (fruit); banana; housemaid cost; grape; carrot; palm sugar; sand; papaya; cooked noodle; hospital care fare; clove-flavored cigarette; wages of labor; gasoline; steamed cake; leek; cabbage; sate (small pieces of meat roasted on skewer) and lumber. Meanwhile, the prices of the following commodities were decreased: purebred chicken meat; red chili; string bean; gold accessories; lived free-range chicken; free-range chicken meat; bean; cucumber and egg plant. The inflation rate for 2007 and year-on-year (January 2007 on January 2006) were 1.04 % and 6.26 % respectively.
The core of CPI in January 2007 changed from 135.82 to 136.82 or yield core inflation 0.74 % compared to the previous month. The volatile good component changed from 147.04 to 151.05 or inflated 2.73 %, and the administered good component changed from 179.13 to 179.78 or inflated 0.36 %. The inflation rate for year-on-year (January 2007 on January 2006) for the core; the volatile; and the administered price inflation were 6.05 %; 12.15 % and 2.15 % respectively.
