New York, (3/3) — On the second day of the official agenda during the 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), held Monday morning (2/3) New York time (Monday evening Jakarta time), Chief Statistician BPS Statistics Indonesia, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, met with the Acting Director of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), Dr. Shantanu Mukherjee, at his office at the United Nations Headquarters.
The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is the UN entity responsible for coordinating National Statistical Offices (NSOs) around the world, including BPS-Statistics Indonesia as Indonesia’s national statistical office. UNSD also holds the mandate to ensure that all NSOs adhere to the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (FPOS) and properly implement internationally standardized statistical methodologies in producing official statistics, including indicators such as economic growth, inflation, and international trade (exports and imports).
The long-standing involvement of BPS-Statistics Indonesia within the global statistical community demonstrates its continued commitment to respect and adhere to these principles, as well as to applying global statistical standards. As a result, the statistics produced by BPS-Statistics Indonesia are not only accurate and of high quality, but also internationally comparable.
During the meeting, the Acting Director of UNSD expressed his appreciation for BPS’s consistency in maintaining credibility and continuously improving the quality of its statistical outputs. He also congratulated BPS-Statistics Indonesia on its new role as Co-Chair of the Governing Board of the International Comparison Program (ICP) together with Brazil’s national statistical office, IBGE.
Chief Statistician BPS-Statistics Indonesia also shared updates on the UN Regional Hub on Big Data and Data Science for Asia and the Pacific, which is managed by BPS-Statistics Indonesia. The initiative was well received and highly appreciated by the United Nations. In particular, Dr. Shantanu Mukherjee expressed his gratitude for BPS-Statistics Indonesia’s leadership and active role in managing the regional hub and facilitating statistical capacity building among NSOs across the Asia-Pacific region, especially in the use of Mobile Positioning Data (MPD). This data source is not only used to produce official tourism statistics, but has also been expanded to other areas. Most recently, MPD has been utilized to map population mobility in districts and cities affected by hydrometeorological disasters in three provinces in Sumatra.
The meeting between Chief Statistician BPS-Statistics Indonesia and UNSD reaffirmed BPS’s strong commitment to maintaining the quality, accuracy, and relevance of the statistics it produces, ensuring that they remain aligned with the principles and methodological standards upheld by national statistical offices worldwide.
