Focus Group Discussion Explores New Statistical Law Draft with Students

July 24, 2025 | Other Activities

Jakarta – On Saturday, July 12, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was held to discuss the draft of the new Statistics Law (RUU Statistik). The event featured remarks from Vice Chief Statistician of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Sonny Harry B. Harmadi, who emphasized the need for the new law to reflect recent developments and changes in the data landscape. Also speaking at the event, Chairman of the House of Representatives Legislative Body (Baleg DPR RI), Bob Hasan, noted that the formulation of the new statistical bill requires broad-based dialogue, including input from students through forums like this FGD.

The session continued with presentations from student representatives. Fabian, from the Mathematics and Actuarial Science program at ITB, opened the discussion, followed by Goni, a Statistics and Data Science student from IPB University, and Ni Putu Lidya Pramesty, representing Polstat STIS. All three welcomed the initiative to revise the statistical law, viewing it as a timely step toward strengthening Indonesia’s national statistical system in line with modern developments. They highlighted the importance of improving data quality, expanding public access, and encouraging civic participation in the statistical ecosystem. In addition, the students proposed the establishment of a supporting institution such as a National Statistics Council, the adoption of international statistical principles, and the creation of clear procedures for managing special statistics. These, they argued, would help ensure accuracy, efficiency, and alignment with existing regulations.
