Abstract

The village is the smallest administrative unit in Indonesia. As the smallest administrative area, a village is often used as a unit of observation. Each village has different socio-economic characteristics, environmental characteristics, and typologies that continue to change over time. These conditions are used as indicators to classify a village into an urban or rural village. The classification of urban and rural villages covers all villages or those known by other names in Indonesia. The classification of villages into urban and rural villages is carried out by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for statistical purposes. BPS uses the classification of urban and rural villages as a basis for sampling, for allocating census/survey personnel, and for determining strategic estimates. Therefore, the classification of urban and rural villages must be defined accurately and precisely.
