Statistical Data Story for Indonesia – Weighing the Benefits and Risks of Marketplace Use in E-Commerce

Cerita Data Statistik Untuk Indonesia (Statistical Data Stories for Indonesia) is a booklet containing articles known as CERDAS, which utilizes innovative data sources and official statistics to provide ideas related to socio-economic issues. In this edition, the Directorate of Statistical Analysis and Development presents an article on digital economy. Marketplaces are the driving force of e-commerce, expanding markets, increasing transactions, and enhancing competitiveness. Businesses that use them have proven to earn higher revenues. However, their adoption requires higher digital and financial literacy, especially among younger entrepreneurs. Risks of power asymmetry also arise, such as limited access to customer data, algorithm manipulation, unfair competition, and unilateral delisting. Policies are therefore needed to balance literacy enhancement with protective regulations. We hope that this booklet can capture the essence of each statistical value, and make these stories inspire us to create better changes for the future of Indonesia, especially in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
