Abstract

A. EXPORTS
  • The value of Indonesia’s exports in May 2023 reached US$21.72 billion, increased 12.61 percent compared to exports in April 2023 and increased 0.96 percent compared to May 2022.
  • Non-oil and gas exports in May 2023 reached US$20.40 billion, increased 13.18 percent compared to non-oil and gas exports in April 2023 and increased 1.94 percent compared to May 2022.
  • Cumulatively, Indonesia’s exports during January–May 2023 reached US$108.06 billion, decreased 6.01 percent over the same period in 2022. Likewise, non-oil and gas exports reached US$101.48 billion or decreased 6.69 percent.
  • The highest increase of non-oil and gas exports in May 2023 was vehicles and accessories thereof commodity, in amount of US$373.2 million or increased 60.20 percent from April 2023. The highest decrease was mineral fuels, in amount of US$175.8 million or decreased 4.39 percent.
  • By industry classification, exports of manufacturing products during period January–May 2023 decreased by 8.97 percent; exports of agriculture, forestry and fisheries also decreased by 3.95 percent; while exports of mining and others increased by 1.36 percent compared to the same period in 2022.
  • The main country destinations of non-oil and gas exports in May 2023 were China at US$4.78 billion, United States of America at US$2.05 billion, and Japan at US$1.77 billion, with the contribution of the three reached 42.12 percent. Meanwhile, exports to ASEAN and the European Union (27 countries) amounted to US$3.97 billion and US$1.56 billion, respectively.
  • According to the province of origin, the largest exports of Indonesia in January– May 2023 came from Jawa Barat with a value of US$14.80 billion (13.70 percent), followed by Kalimantan Timur at US$12.83 billion (11.87 percent), and Jawa Timur at US$9.63 billion (8.91 percent).

B. IMPORTS
  • Imports of Indonesia in May 2023 were worth US$21.28 billion, rose by 38.65 percent compared with April 2023, and increased by 14.35 percent compared with May 2022.
  • Imports of oil and gas in May 2023 were worth US$3.14 billion, increased by 6.09 percent compared with April 2023, yet decreased by 6.52 percent compared with May 2022.
  • Imports of non-oil and gas in May 2023 were worth US$18.14 billion, increased by 46.42 percent compared with April 2023, and rose by 18.94 percent compared with May 2022.
  • The most significant increase in imports of non-oil and gas in May 2023 was machinery/mechanical appliances and parts thereof which rose by US$1,063.7 million (52.49 percent). On the contrary, residues and waste from the food industries experinced the highest fall with US$36.5 million (9.15 percent) decrease.
  • The largest trading partner countries of non-oil and gas imports in January–May 2023 were China US$25.13 billion (32.57 percent), Japan US$6.83 billion (8.85 percent), and Thailand US$4.53 billion (5.87 percent). Imports of non-oil and gas from ASEAN and EU countries were US$12.99 billion (16.84 percent) and US$5.70 billion (7.38 percent), respectively.
  • Compared with the same period last year, imports of intermediate goods in January–May 2023 experienced the highest fall with a US$6,169.6 million (8.35 percent) decrease. On the other hand, imports of consumption and capital goods experienced increases with a US$378.8 million (4.85 percent) and US$2,189.6 million (16.22 percent) rise, respectively.
  • Indonesia’s balance of trade in May 2023 experienced a surplus of US$0.44 billion, which mainly affected by a surplus of non-oil and gas of US$2.26 billion. On the other hand, there was a deficit of US$1.82 billion in oil and gas.
