Abstract

A. Tourism Progress

  • In the third month of 2023, international visitor arrivals in Indonesia were 809.96 thousand. The number of international visitors increased by 15.39 percent compared with February 2023 (month-to-month) and 470.37 percent compared with the same month last year (year-on-year). This escalation showed that the recovery of the tourism sector in Indonesia is continuing. International arrivals in March 2023 were dominated by visitors from Malaysia (15.39 percent), Singapore (13.74 percent), and Australia (11.87 percent).
  • Cumulatively, the international visitor arrivals from January to March 2023 also increased by 508.87 percent compared to 2022. This increase in international visitors was mainly recorded from the gates of Ngurah Rai and Soekarno-Hatta airports, which increased by 6,274.83 percent and 623.78, respectively.
  • The upturn in tourism activity was also recorded from the room occupancy rate in March 2023. The room occupancy rate of classified hotels was 46.26 percent, which increased by 1.11 percentage points (year-on-year). While compared with the previous month, the room occupancy rate of classified hotels experienced a decrease of 1.57 percentage points (month-to-month). Even so, it should be noted that the room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels was 21.26 percent, decreased by 0.80 percentage points (year-on-year), and decreased by 1.41 percentage points (month-to-month). The average length of stay at classified hotels also showed an increase of 0.05 points compared with the previous year.

B. Growth of National Transport

  • The number of domestic air transport passengers departing in March 2023 was 4.9 million or increased by 10.61 percent compared to February 2023. The number of international air transport passengers increased by 10.25 percent to 1.2 million. From January to March 2023, the number of domestic air transport passengers was 14.2 million and increased by 32.69 percent. The number of international air transport passengers was 3.3 million and increased by 788.82 percent compared to the same period in 2022.
  • The number of domestic sea transport passengers departing in March 2023 was recorded at 1.5 million, increasing by 11.56 percent compared to February 2023. The freight transported by domestic sea transport increased by 4.16 percent, turning 28.6 million tons. From January to March 2023, the number of domestic sea transport passengers reached 4.3 million and increased by 13.30 percent compared to the same period in 2022. Meanwhile, freight increased by 7.57 percent, reaching 84.0 million tons.
  • The number of railway passengers departing in March 2023 was 29.8 million people, which increased by 13.56 percent compared to February 2023. Furthermore, freight transported by train increased by 11.61 percent to 5.7 million tons. The number of passengers reached 85.1 million in January–March 2023 and increased by 69.37 percent compared to the same period in 2022. Moreover, the cumulative freight transported by train rose by 20.34 percent to 16.2 million tons.
