Leveraging Statistical Data to Address Housing Realities in Papua
April 29, 2026 | Other Activities
The need for adequate housing in the Papua region remains a major challenge that requires serious attention. In Papua Pegunungan, nearly 90% of the population does not yet live in adequate housing. Meanwhile, in Central Papua, more than half of the population also faces similar conditions. This fact underscores that equitable welfare, particularly in terms of access to decent, safe, and healthy housing, must be accelerated through more targeted and impactful measures.
Efforts to build and rehabilitate decent housing in the six provinces of Papua are a strategic priority for the government. This program focuses not only on physical construction but also on ensuring that interventions effectively reach those most in need.
In this context, the availability of accurate and integrated data is key. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) plays a role in providing the data foundation through the development of the National Single Social and Economic Data (DTSEN). This data is compiled with precision down to the “by name by address” (BNBA) level and is supplemented with information on the physical condition of homes in the field.
Through collaboration with the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Ditjen Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, DTSEN is expected to become the primary reference for program targeting. As a result, the allocation of government assistance and interventions can be carried out more effectively, efficiently, and with greater precision. This step is part of a shared commitment to ensure that every Indonesian family, including those in the Papua region, has access to decent housing as the foundation for a better life in the future.
