BPS, Bappenas, and OIKN Publish Findings from the Nusantara Capital City Population Enumeration

December 18, 2025 | Other Activities

Jakarta, 17 December — The population of Indonesia’s Nusantara Capital City (IKN) has reached 147.43 thousand people, comprising 43,293 households, with 67.91 percent of residents in the productive age group. These figures are drawn from the 2025 Nusantara Capital City Population Enumeration (PPIKN 2025), jointly released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, and the Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN) at a press briefing in Jakarta on Tuesday (16 December).

The delineated IKN area covers Kutai Kartanegara Regency and Penajam Paser Utara Regency. In terms of spatial distribution, the highest population concentrations are found in Samboja Kuala Village, Muara Jawa Ulu Village, Muara Jawa Pesisir Village, and Telemow Village, each with population densities exceeding 400 people per square kilometer. As centers of daily activity, these areas are expected to become priorities for the provision of basic services and infrastructure in the future development of IKN.

BPS also recorded a dependency ratio of 47.25, meaning that every 100 people of working age support approximately 47–48 non-working-age individuals. The data show that Generation Z and millennials together account for half of IKN’s population in 2025. The male population slightly exceeds the female population, with a sex ratio of 106. One notable finding is that the oldest resident of IKN is a 108-year-old woman, born in Ujung Pandang near the end of the First World War.

Population mobility patterns indicate that 41.16 percent of IKN residents were born outside the IKN area, while 6.03 percent moved to IKN within the last five years. The three largest provinces of origin for in-migration are East Kalimantan (29.20 percent), South Sulawesi (20.36 percent), and East Java (12.91 percent).

PPIKN 2025 also captured key health and social indicators. The infant mortality rate is estimated at 14–15 deaths per 1,000 live births, while the maternal mortality ratio is around 143 deaths per 100,000 live births. BPS recorded a total fertility rate of 2.14, which is lower than the average desired number of children among women aged 15–49 (2.59). This gap indicates the presence of underachieved fertility in the IKN area.

In addition, the enumeration generated geotagged household data, enabling more spatially targeted policy interventions. BPS data show that 232 households (0.54 percent) still have earthen floors, 142 households (0.33 percent) lack access to toilet facilities, 530 households (1.22 percent) rely primarily on rainwater for drinking, and 49 households (0.11 percent) have not yet been connected to electricity.

The Chief Statistician of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, emphasized the strategic value of the PPIKN 2025 results. “Beyond providing comprehensive population data, this activity produces key demographic indicators for policymaking, supplies geotagged household information for more precise interventions, and serves as a foundational framework for future surveys and strategic analyses in the IKN area,” she stated during the Dissemination of Results and Launch of the PPIKN 2025 Publication in Jakarta on Tuesday (16 December).

Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Rachmat Pambudy, underscored the broader significance of the data in his keynote address. “These IKN population statistics form the foundation for sustainable development of the new capital. A census is not merely a data-collection exercise; it is the state’s effort to better understand its people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Basuki Hadimuljono, Head of the Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN), noted that BPS is the sole institution mandated to release official national statistics. “This publication will serve as the primary reference for all stakeholders working together to build IKN. With the territorial delineation now finalized and the population fully enumerated, the data framework is complete,” he remarked.

The handover of the PPIKN 2025 results reflects strong, solid, and integrated collaboration among institutions in providing basic statistics for the IKN region. BPS reported that the enumeration involved 856 field officers drawn from local communities, with data collection conducted from 1 July to 15 August 2025.
