Concepts and Definitions in Foreign Visitor Statistics

The definition used for visitor corresponds to the IUOTO/WTO recomendations which covers all persons visiting a country other than that in which they have usual place of residence, for any reason other than following an occupation renumerated from within the country visited. This definition covers 2 (two) categories of foreign visitors, namely.
  1. Tourist is any visitor according to the definition above, staying at least 24 hours, but not more than 6 (six) months, in the place visited, with the intention of visiting, among others for the purpose of :
    1. Pleasure, recreation and sports.
    2. Business, visiting friends and families, missions, attending meeting, conferences, visit for health reason, study and religion.
  2. Excursionist is any visitor according to the definition above, staying less than 24 hours in place visited (including cruise passenger, i.e any visitor arriving in a country by ship or train, not staying in an accommodation available in the country)


Concepts and Definitions in Hotel and Other Accommodation Statistics in Indonesia

  1. Accommodation establishment
    is an establishment which uses a building especially prepared to any person to stay, eat and obtain service as well as other facilities against payment.

  2. Star hotel
    is an establishment which uses a building or part of building especially prepared to any person to stay, eat and obtain service as well as other facilities against payment, and it has fulfilled the requirements as s star hotel which have been stated by the Regional Tourism Agency. The special characterstic of hotel is having restaurant under hotel management.

  3. Jasmine hotel
    is an establishment which uses a building or part of building especially prepared to any person to stay, eat and obtain service as well as other facilities against payment, and it has not fulfilled the requirements as a star hotel, but it has fulfilled as a jasmine hotel issued by Regional Tourism Agency.

  4. Youth hotel
    is an accommodation establishment especially for adolescentin the framework of tourism activity and broadening of knowledge or experience.

  5. Homestay
    is an accommodation establishment for public which is conducted by private by using part or all of his/her house (against payment)

  6. Camping Site
    is an accommodation establishment in the open-air by using tent or trailer as a place to stay, including caravan.

  7. Other accommodation
    is an establishment other than mentioned above, such as inn.

  8. Average worker per establishment
    is the number of worker of accommodation establishment (agree with its classification) divided by the number of establishmnet (included in that group).

  9. Average worker per room
    is the number of worker in accommodation services divided by the number of accommodation room (agree with its classification).

  10. Average guest per day
    is the number of staying guest in hotel/accommodation per day calculated based on the number of guest stayed during the year.

Hotel and Accommodation

Primary data based on survey held by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) using VHT-S quetionnaire on monthly basis and VHT-L quetionnaire on yearly basis.

COVERAGE

Visitor

Data on foreign visitors cover all foreign visitors directly arrived in Indonesia through the airports, seaports and land. There are altogether 73 ports of entry into Indonesia covering the whole area of a country, of which 47 are seaports, 19 are airports and 3 are through land. The four main ports are namely Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), Ngurah Rai (Bali), Polonia (Medan) and Sekupang (Batam).

The data collected on the room occupancy rates covering
All the existing classified hotels throughout Indonesia, based on hotel classification results, conducted by the Department of Culture and Tourism.
All non classified hotel throughout Indonesia, which are observed on selected sample.
