SOURCE OF DATA

Population Censuses (PC) and various surveys are the main sources of Labor Statistics in Indonesia. The list of these sources are as follows:
  1. Population Censuses (1961, 1971, 1980, and 1990)

  2. Due to some considerations, the last three censuses are mostly used in the analysis.

  3. Intercensal Population Surveys (1976, 1985, and 1995)

  4. National Labor Force Surveys (1976 to 1978, 1986 to 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999)

  5. National Socio-Economic Surveys (1982, 1992 to 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999)
BPS-Statistics Indonesia had also use some administrative information from other sources such as from the Ministry of Manpower.

COVERAGE

Data on labor are collected in a sample bases. However, the surveys were intended to cover all Indonesia's geographical areas. List of the coverage and sample size are as follows.
  1. Population Censuses (PC)

  2. In the 1971 PC the number of household selected were about 3.8 percents of the population. Those who were living in Timor Timur (East Timor) and isolated areas in Papua were excluded.

  3. Intercensal Population Survey (IPS)

  4. In the first IPS which was held in 1976, there are about 60,733 households included in the surveys. In this time only 26 provinces were covered. The second IPS which was held in 1985, covered about 125,400 households. The third IPS which was held in 1995, covered about 206,848 household from all geographical areas in Indonesia.

  5. National Labor Force Survey (NLFS)

  6. This survey began in 1976. As the first NLFS conducted by BPS, this survey was a baseline, especially in questionnaire design which was mostly used for another similar surveys. The next NLFS were conducted in 1977, 1978, and 1986 to 1994. Timor Timur was excluded from the first two surveys. Households which were covered in each period of the survey were quite different, as follows:

    • 1976 covered about 95,400 households

    • 1977 and 1978 NLFS covered about 71,550 households

    • 1986 to 1993 NLFS covered about 65,490 households

    • 1994 NLFS covered about 65,524 households

    • 1997 NLFS covered about 65,664 households

    • 1998 NLFS covered about 49,248 households

    • 1999 NLFS covered about 48.576 household

  7. National Socio-Economic Survey (NSES)

  8. Basically, this survey is aimed to collect data on socio-economic situation among people in Indonesia. However, the information regarding labor force were also being collected, especially in the 1982 NSES when labor force was set to be the main module. NSES were conducted in all provinces (27) and covered 60,400 households in 1982. Started from1 992 and on (at least until 1995) the number of households selected was enlarged to 206,076. It is expected that from this large survey, parameters for smaller areas (regency instead of province) can be estimated.
Frequency

Due to importance and base on the government regulations, Population Census and Intercensal Population Surveys are conducted every ten years. Other surveys are held quarterly (NLFS 1976, 1986, to 1993) or annually (NLFS 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, and NSES).
